Saltaire Striders is a small, friendly running club. The club organises a number of runs throughout the week, and caters for adult athletes of any age from 18 to 85 and of any ability from complete beginner to serious athlete (sorry we do not allow accompanying dogs).

Our organised weekly runs start at 19:00 on Mondays from Victoria Road, Saltaire, and Thursdays from Nuffield Health Shipley Fitness & Wellbeing Gym car park. We also have a Wednesday track session at Carlton Keighley starting at 19:15.

What can I expect from my club run?

At Saltaire Striders we want all our members to enjoy their running, and especially the time they spend with us on club runs. This applies to everyone, whether they just want a safe and sociable time with friends, or whether they want to push themselves to improve speed and technique.

To do this we offer a variety of runs at different paces to suit everybody, and sometimes incorporating extras so that those who want to can do a bit more. All runs are led by trained leaders. Obviously the details will depend on the route chosen, the conditions and the mix in the group, but we thought a rough guide would be helpful.

All group runs incorporate breaks for regrouping and recovery and leaders will where possible ‘lead from the back’. Faster runners will be encouraged to run back from regroup points and rejoin the main group.

We will support members who want to move up through groups – remember no Strider is left behind – but if runners want to stay in the same one, or step down because of injury or upcoming races that is fine. Basically the groups get a bit longer, and the average pace a bit faster, as you move through them but should all be taking an hour or so to complete. Not everybody uses pace as a guide so we have also suggested typical parkrun times for each group.

Group 1

Typically group one runs will be roughly 4 miles/6km. Perfect for Striders who want an easier, sociable run, including those who have recently started or returned to running, having already got to the point of being able to run 3 miles/5km * Also good for coming back after injury or if you need a rest before or after a big race. The moving pace will usually be 10 minute miles or slower, which equates to a parkrun time of 30 minutes or more.

Group 2

These runs will be a bit further, typically 5-6mi/8-9km and a bit faster, moving pace of approx. 9-10 min/miles, so a parkrun time of under 30 minutes. An achievable step up for anyone running comfortably in group 1.

Group 3

If your parkrun time is approaching or better than 25 minutes you could give group 3 a try. You will be going about 6-7 miles / 9-11 km on Mondays, 7-8miles / 11-12km Thursdays and the moving pace can be up to 8 min/miles.

Group 4

This run is for members who are more experienced and running frequently. Runners in this group will probably be doing sub 22m parkruns. The routes tend to be 7-8 miles / 11-13km on Mondays, 8-10m/12-16km on Thursdays, with a moving pace faster than 8 min/miles.

Track

All Striders are welcome at our weekly interval training sessions. There is no minimum pace. All abilities are welcome and can benefit from track, but we’d recommend that you’ve been running regularly for at least 4-6 months first.

* If you’re not yet able to run 3 miles/5km, a Couch to 5k programme is a good idea, eg https://www.nhs.uk/live-well/exercise/running-and-aerobic-exercises/get-running-with-couch-to-5k/

See the Meets page for full details or the google calendar for details and the exact meeting points for the various groups.

Ad hoc runs on Saturday and/or Sunday are organised via the facebook group Saltaire Marathon, Long Or Short Run Friends.

All abilities are catered for and we pride ourselves on looking after newcomers – nobody gets left behind.

New members are welcome to come and try us for free for a few weeks before they need to pay any subscriptions.

Training sessions are varied with runs between 3 and 8 miles in distance – on the road during the winter months and mainly off road through the local woods and moors when light permits. Speed and hill sessions are also incorporated in the training program devised by the UK Athletics qualified male and female club coaches/run in England leaders. The coaches are always willing to discuss and assist you with any training matters and will be happy to devise individual training plans to meet specific needs/goals.

Members of the club compete in races on the roads, fells and cross country.

Socially the club organises quiz nights, members socials, trips to races, etc.

Membership details are available here.
